‘Saved by the Bell’ reboot is coming to NBC’s new streaming service

The 'Saved by the Bell' reboot will feature Zack Morris as the governor of California

Coming next year to Peacock, NBC’s newly announced streaming app, the Saved by the Bell reboot will feature Zack Morris as the governor of California. That’s right, Zack is in charge of the Golden State, and it totally makes sense. Preppy has a smile made to win your vote.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s participation in the program has not yet been confirmed. In fact, he wasn’t even approached to play the role! “I read it in the trades just like everybody else this morning,” says Gosselaar.

But, come on, how could we watch anyone else? Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley are definitely in and are in fact producing! 30 Rock’s Tracey Wigfield will be writing and executive producing, with Franco Bario and our Bayside legend Peter Engel.

NBC gives a mysterious premise for the show. For Governor Zack, the political pot is boiling:

“When California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state — including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over privileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality.”

Los Angeles Times

So, millennial Bayside, occupied by a bunch of Lisa Turtles and Zack Morris’s, will be ‘hardcore judging’ kids from the streets (another Jessie’s stepbrother situation?). Sources also intimate that Lopez and Berkley will be playing Mamma and Papa to kids of their own.

This, of course, is not the first Saved by the Bell sequel to grace our televisions. Since the conclusion of the four-season-show in 1993, we’ve had The New Class (for which we all deserve an apology), The College Years , and the adventure-packed Wedding in Las Vegas. After all these years, Bayside’s return to TV will be nostalgia to the max. We hope.

Are Gosselaar and our other Bayside buddies on board? Have Zack and Kelly stayed together all these years? Will the Bayside-Valley rivalry continue? We’re “so excited” to find out!
