Netflix is set to air a hip-hop talent competition show

'Rhythm + Flow' will feature Chance the Rapper, Cardi B, and T.I.

Slowly but surely, hip-hop is gaining ground on prime time TV. After Hulu just announced its Wu-Tang Clan series, Netflix is set to premiere its hip-hop-themed music competition show on October 9. Rhythm + Flow was originally announced last November, and the judges who will discover new hip-hop stars will be Chance the Rapper, Cardi B, and T.I.

As Digital Music News (DMN) reports, Netflix is set to look for hip-hop talent throughout the United States, currently concentrating on New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta, with other cities to be announced later. DMN poses legitimate questions, “where the contestants will be sourced, and whether labels, management agencies or other entities can feed talent into the contest.”

The show will be effectively working for three weeks, based on which Netflix is preparing to show 10 episodes. As it is reported, “the first week of the event will include auditions, while the second week will pit contestants against each other and will also include the production of music videos as well as group ciphers. In the final week, the show will showcase collaborations and delve into sampling, too. The judges will also select a winner at this time.”

As DMN duly notes, it is no wonder that Netflix is counting big on the eventual popularity of a hip-hop music contest, as it will soon stay without very popular show reruns such as The Office and Friends, and some of its original series are not doing as well as expected.
