Massive Attack joins the fight against climate change

The British trip-hop band almost gave up touring completely

Massive Attack, one of the key trip-hop innovators of the recent decades are joining the fight against climate change. In a recent opinion piece published in The Guardian, Robert del Naja, aka 3D, one of the two mainstays of the band wrote the following:

“We’ve also discussed ending touring altogether – an important option that deserves consideration. In reality, however, an entire international roster of acts would need to stop touring to achieve the required impact. In a major employment industry with hundreds of acts, this isn’t about to happen.”

But deciding to do something anyway, the band will, as Bristol Post writes, “team up with the University of Manchester to create an environmental blueprint for the music industry.” According to that plan, scientists from the University “will study data from Massive Attack’s touring schedule to provide guidance on how bands can become more eco-friendly.” The University’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research will “map Massive Attack’s travel, production, audience transportation, and venue impact.”

Del Naja also told BBC that “the challenge now is to not only make personal sacrifices, but to insist on the systemic change that’s needed. Business, as usual, is over.”

He added that, “given the current polarised social atmosphere, uplifting and unifying cultural events are arguably more important now than ever, and no one would want to see them postponed or even canceled. The challenge, therefore, is to avoid more pledges, promises and greenwashing headlines and instead embrace seismic change.”
