Legendary broadcaster Sir David Attenborough is organizing a competition to remix his old field recordings

Old field recordings to be remixed and chosen by a celebrity judging panel

Sir Richard Attenborough is a well-known broadcaster who has made some of the best documentary films and TV series about natural life on this planet. What is less known is that during his world travels, Attenborough, who is celebrating his 93rd birthday this May has been constantly making field recordings of local music and musicians throughout the world.

In a way, as part of the celebration, world music magazine Songlines and the PRS Foundation are organizing a competition for music makers, that would involve a remix of recordings Attenborough made in Bali 70 years ago.

DJ Mag reminds us of the fact that Attenborough has already released an album of his music filed recordings titled My Field Recordings From Across The Planet, which was released in November 2018, and “Gender Wayang”, a Gamelan track that will be used in the competition, comes from this album.

As Attenborough explained it in a Songlines interview, “The villagers will sit down while the leader of the Gamelan orchestra will convey his composition, teaching them, one at a time how to play,” Attenborough continues, “..they then play this concerted music with extraordinary precision and real zest. So it is haunting music that you hear every night – or you did in those days, in the villages of Bali.”

The competition will have quite a celebrated panel that will, along with Attenborough, include broadcaster and songwriter Cerys Matthews, twice Mercury Prize-nominated artist Ghostpoet, electronic artist and producer Hannah Peel, DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson, and musician, artist, producer, and writer Matthew Herbert.

Competitors will submit their remix through a private Soundcloud link by June 6, 2019, a shortlist of six tracks will be selected, there will be a public vote from mid-July to mid-September 2019, and the winner will be announced on November 1, 2019. More information on the competition can be found at the PRS Foundation site.
