‘I Am Mother’ Trailer: Hilary Swank faces off against Rose Byrne’s insidious robo-mom

The Sundance hit whips straight to Netflix land

The adage “mother knows best” is taken much to heart in Grant Sputore’s I Am Mother, a new sci-fi thriller set to premiere on Netflix on June 7, 2019.

The film first appeared back in January at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned praises from critics, including that of The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney, who says the film is, “an uncommonly ambitious feature debut with impressive design work, sharp visual effects, a fabulous A.I. creation and a compelling lead performance from talented Danish newcomer Clara Rugaard.”

In preparation for the film’s upcoming release, Netflix has dropped a new trailer. You can watch it in full below.

If I can say one thing about the trailer, it’s that it emulates the same kind of intrigue and atmosphere the critics and reviewers have been talking about. Technophobia is the running theme here, with the film seemingly pulling from such films as Terminator, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and Ex Machina among others.

I Am Mother stars Rose Byrne as the titular matriarchal machine (Mother), who nurses a young girl named Daughter (Clara Rugaard) into adulthood. All has been well until a stranger (played by Hilary Swank) puts a wrench in everything Daughter thought was true all her life, forcing her to question the only being that she has interacted with for years.

The new film premieres on Netflix on June 7th, 2019.
