Danny Boyle’s latest film explores a world where The Beatles never existed

'Yesterday' is one of the featured films at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Imagine there’s no Beatles… Not a thing late John Lennon had in mind when he wrote his iconic song, but filmmaker Danny Boyle, of Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire fame, did with his latest film Yesterday. The movie is actually one of the featured titles at the currently running Tribeca Film Festival and its premiere is scheduled on May 4.

While the idea may seem new to viewers outside of Great Britain, it was actually first introduced in the ’90s as a premise to a BBC show called Goodnight Sweetheart.

The premise of the Boyle movie revolves around a singer/songwriter who is having trouble with success, who wakes up one morning and realizes he is the only one who remembers The Beatles and any of their songs. The screenplay was written by Richard Curtis based on a story by Jack Barth.

In its preview, LA Times comments that, “far from a one-joke exercise, is a consistently winsome and unexpectedly rich artistic and social exploration from Boyle and Curtis.”

Hollywood Reporter also reveals that Ed Sheehan has a cameo role (as himself) and had a chance to speak to Boyle, who recounted how he fell in love with The Beatles as a kid.

As Boyle explains, “‘Hello, Goodbye’ is my favorite, among who knows how many favorites you could ever think of. I have a twin sister and a younger sister as well. My parents would play the songs downstairs when we’d been put to bed. This was when they first came out — the ‘Love Me Do’ and the great ‘She Loves You’ and all those. When we were 8 or 9 years old, we all shared a bedroom upstairs and we used to play The Beatles. My twin sister was in love with Paul McCartney, so she was Paul and I was John and the youngest sister could be either George or Ringo. It was terribly unfair and that was probably the truth for George and Ringo, throughout their lives.”
