No big money, no space, no instruments, but you have the urge to make music – what do you do? Ukrainian indie band Brunettes Shoot Blondes might have a solution for you. You salvage an old grand piano that might have ended up in a scrap yard, you call in a few engineer friends to help you out with some technical aspects and you fit this piano with 20 other instruments. In the process, you also create something that can be considered a great piece of visual art.
In the recently dropped ‘Making of’ video for their song “Houston”, band’s leader Andrew Kovaliov talks about the live performance showcasing their newly constructed instrument that includes tambourine, violin, melodica, cello, kick drum, glockenspiel, and percussion. Oh, and no electricity is involved, but three years of hard work is.
Talking about the initial idea, band member and line producer Roman Sobol, says: “Andrew suggested, ‘Let’s make a grand piano, but when the keys are pushed there will be no grand piano sound coming out, but a violin instead, or a drum, or something else.”
“It was divided into three equal sectors. So, we decided to leave the middle part as it is – a grand piano and the other two parts we dedicated to separate groups of instruments. One part would be for shakers, tambourines, cymbals, the other part will have violins and a cello.”
