Video Roundup 5/13-5/19

Anderson .Paak is finally back! And with a banger of a track. He’s always been as versatile as they come when it comes to musical styles, and “Bubblin” sees him tap into his more braggadocio rapper side on a beat that’s very reminiscent of classic Timbaland. I’m sure it’s coincidence but the video seems to have a very similar message and theme to J. Cole’s recent “ATM” video, albeit a little less surreal and the level of stunting turned up to an 11. Who would have ever thought we’d see the Big Tymers get back together, but Birdman must have finally paid Mannie after all of these years because the two are back with a new single. The First 48 inspired video is NOLA through and through, complete with marching bands and Mardi Gras attire, but the real star here is Mannie Fresh’s long missed signature snare rolls – brings back fond memories. It’s been a long time since we last heard something significant from Aloe Blacc, but he’s back with a feel good ode to NY, particularly Brooklyn, and it’s cookout vibes are just in time for the summer. The video, of course, is a love letter to Brooklyn and its unique culture and people.

Jessie Reyez goes full Salem Witch Trial for her latest single, “Body Count.” While seemingly a strange choice at first, it’s actually fitting for her song about women empowerment and independence. Not to mention, the song is downright catchy and full of quotable and meme-worthy lines. The SZA and Childish Gambino chemistry continues to build as this time it’s him who shows up in her latest video for her song, “Garden (Say It Like Dat).” Not sure the reasons behind it, but we’d ship it. The video itself is pretty simple, but its hazy, dreamlike aesthetics really capture and set the mood, which doubles as a Mother Day’s tribute with her mother’s cameo.
