Joyner Lucas has always been known for his songs with a message but if he’s not careful he’ll quickly become labeled as a gimmick rapper if every song he puts out is one. That’s not to say that “Frozen”, his song and video about texting/drinking and driving isn’t incredibly powerful, because it is, with some haunting imagery that’s sure to hit close to home for many and serve as a warning to everyone out there. Chromeo team up with DRAM (so I guess we’re dropping the Big Baby part now) for a feel good song just in time for the summer. Maybe it’s just me but I definitely think DRAM’s vocals are getting better. The video shows the duo over the decades involved in all kinds of shenanigans and I’d like to think that they’re all true. Leon Bridges is back with another one and I just can’t help but get chills every time I hear those incredible vocals; definitely one of the best new voices out there. Combine that with the slicked back hair and old school wardrobe, you get some very clear connections to the glory days of Motown. The video is simple and somber yet very impactful with it’s everyday imagery and focus on real life people, not their over-glamorized selves.
Despite getting ravaged by us and others alike, Eminem is still pushing Revival hard but despite giving the album time to breathe I still just don’t think it’s a good project. “Framed” was one of the more bearable songs off that album as it’s the closest to the Em we’ve grown to know and love, but even this song’s not great. The video is a high production affair and it ups the psychotic and disturbing imagery but much like his album it all feels very forced. Following up “God’s Plan” Drake returns with the second single off his upcoming album. Sampling Lauryn Hill you’d think we’d be getting slowed down Drake but he takes things in the opposite direction and ups the tempo. The video is full of famous guest appearances and drives home the fact that this one is definitely aimed at all the women out there. Maybe the song will grow on me but right now I’m not feeling it all that much, there’s just too much going on here.
