Video Roundup 2/18/18

Video Roundup 2/18-2/24

It was a pretty slow week for new music videos but there were still a few worth mentioning like Rapsody’s new video for “Chrome (Like Ooh),” which makes great use of slow motion and tells a real narrative without having to hit you over the head with it. The switch up from black and white to full blown color perfectly matches with the song and the beat switch up as if the reality of the lifestyle finally snaps into focus. Her and her phenomenal last album are things that should be truly appreciated. Janelle Monáe hit us with a video for “Make Me Feel” which features a famous face and just like the song and herself in general the video is absolutely oozing with style. The colors, the wardrobes, the ’80s vibes are all on point with the ’80s visual vibes in particular being a choice as the song sounds like something straight from Prince’s catalog. Trippie Redd (yes I’m talking about Trippie Red, it’s a slow week ok) teams up with Travis Scott for a completely over the top grindhouse, Dawn of the Dead-esque, style video that sees the pair gunning down wave after wave of zombie, even running one over with a monster truck in spectacular fashion. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t completely feeling this one with it’s B-movie horror aesthetics and dark, knocking beat that you can’t help but nod along to.

Hussle season is upon us as Nipsey Hussle continues to provide motivation to the streets with his new action packed video for “Hussle and Motivate” inspired by movies like The Town. The song doesn’t kick in for almost 3-minutes but when you got a budget like this you gotta let it ride. Lastly, James Bay gave us the video for his first single from his forthcoming sophomore album. While the video isn’t anything particularly spectacular, the sound of the song is definitely different than what we’ve previously heard from him before. Sonically it definitely sounds noticeably ‘wavier’ than his more straight forward pop but I’m digging it still the same.
