When The Neighbourhood first burst onto the scene they were a novel act that blended elements of hip-hop and alternative rock in ways we’d hardly seen before. But as the years went on and new acts like Post Malone and countless others turned their approach from an outlier to the norm, thus causing their music to lose some of it’s original potency. They’ve tried to recapture some of that musical potency with their third studio album, and while I felt like it was a solid effort overall, it still felt a bit contrived when compared to everything else out there and at this point I’m not sure what they could do to regain that initial spark. Outside of some real standouts like “Scary Love”, “Nervous”, and “Softcore”, which have some incredible grooves and melodies (and some fantastic synth work), there was nothing that jumped out at me as truly unique or special. They’re like a more emo version of Maroon 5 at this point, without the mega singles. There’s still some potential here, it’s just mostly gone unrealized.

Wolf Alice - Visions Of A Life | Reactions | LIVING LIFE FEARLESS
Wolf Alice is fiery, fierce, and absolutely captivating on 'Visions of a Life' and pulls it all off with nonchalant indifference that reminds me of the rock from yesteryear. It revels in an intense youthful catharsis full of big payoffs and it keeps me coming back for more.

N.E.R.D - No One Ever Really Dies
N.E.R.D's long awaited return isn't nearly as impactful protest music as they'd like you to believe but it is a wild ride nonetheless. On another note, it's taken nearly a decade for the rest of music to have even remotely caught up with their experimental sounds, so that's a testament to their vision in itself.

Maroon 5 - Red Pill Blues
Maroon 5's latest is an extremely smooth, well polished, and professional sounding album that combined with Levine's now universal pop voice makes for a largely enjoyable listen. But it doesn't leave much of a mark either, incapable of evoking any genuine emotion.

“Maybe I shouldn’t try to be perfect
I confess, I’m obsessed with the surface
In the end, if I fall or if I get it all
I just hope that it’s worth it”
