Mr. Robot quickly shot into my short list of favorite TV shows thanks to its Fight Club-esque story, cynical societal commentary, and fantastic character portrayal from Remi Malak. Season 3 is all about Elliot fighting back, against his split personality and against Phase 2 of The Dark Army and F Society’s plan to take down ECorp for good. As always, things aren’t always as they seem and he finds himself once again with his back against the wall against seemingly insurmountable odds. There’s brutal violence and deaths, betrayals, espionage, 4th wall breaking, and it’s all filtered through the unreliable mind and memories of the lead protagonist.
This is the most intense season of Mr. Robot yet and it did a great job of pushing the story forward and setting things up for the next season and his fight against the ever more dangerous and far reaching Dark Army. It was a mission reset of sorts as he now knows who the real enemies of the people are and he once again vows to bring them to light. It’s something I think the show needed as his true purpose got lost in this and last season. The performances were fantastic as always with special note of Grace Gummer who plays special agent Dominique DiPierro and Joey Bada$$ as Leon. They steal the scene whenever they make an appearance, Joey Badas$$ in particular.

This season felt a bit off pacing wise (and not just due it’s disjointed nature) and I didn’t find myself clamoring for the next episode like I was in the first season, but it progressively got stronger towards the end with some great scenes and their best season finale yet – although I hate the reintroduction of a certain character before the end credits (I was ready to move past him and his story). It’s a grim world and things feel even more hopeless and impossible than before but they have re-energized me for next season. Especially now that we have Elliott and Mr. Robot actually working together.
Also R.I.P Trenton and Mobley, I was hoping that they’d at least make it out safely as they’re genuinely good people, but alas they were just more collateral damage from Elliott/Mr. Robot’s ill-conceived plans.
Now with the FBI mole dead, I’m interested to see where that will leave Dominique DiPierro and if she will try to fight back against them or just comply.
Fernando, the douchebag dealer from Season 1 has returned and that can only mean bad things. I was hoping we were done with him as his caricature was too over-the-top for me but I hope he’s at least there to do more than antagonize Elliott. Because we’ve been there and done that.
