Historian is an LA-based psych-folk band which evokes the audio image of a tripping-on-acid Leonard Cohen. And just like a psychedelic journey can have almost diametrically opposite in nature stops, so does Historian’s Expanse LP.

Their sound consists of jazz-like equivocal mashups of major and minor undertones which give their songs an unpredictable feel and curve. This musical approach makes for a rather immersive listening experience, the perfect musical backdrop for drunk, hazy thoughts about life, death, and anything else that can sway with the swelling string sections and vocals. Certain songs and their titles bring strange connotations of a suicide note, written by someone who has finally made his peace with the world.

Overall, Expanse is definitely an ambitious project which induces a reflective frame of mind.  At times, it feels as if in their strive to create something more unconventional and allude to a bigger, trippier picture, Historian obscures what that picture actually is. This overemphasis on ambiguity can create a reverse effect and snap the listener out of the otherwise pleasantly melancholic state.

Nevertheless, a decent attempt at creating something not meant for the masses, which within the context of today’s music landscape is worthy of respect, as well as a listen.
