Despite the fact that I seem to see his name everywhere, Charlie Puth has never really left any type of significant mark musically. Voicenotes is a small step in the right direction for him in crafting a musical identity that stands out from the dozens of other nearly genetically similar acts out there. While he is still firmly in the pop camp, he leans heavily into classic R&B tropes and its more sultry elements, resulting in a surprisingly smooth, groove laden listen. He even goes as far as enlisting ’90s R&B icons Boyz II Men. It’s not an entirely new direction that we haven’t seen others of his like take, but it’s a direction and sound that really seems to fit him and it brought out so much more of his character than any of his previous work ever did. Voicenotes isn’t the most exciting or original album to come out of pop but it does provide a much stronger argument as to why we should care about Charlie Puth as an artist outside of an occasional big feature.

Kimbra - Primal Heart Reaction | Reactions | LIVING LIFE FEARLESS
What could have been a unique, inventive experience came off as more generic and safe than anything. There's some flashes of something truly special throughout Primal Heart, but ultimately Kimbra is unable to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

Tinashe - Joyride | Reactions | LIVING LIFE FEARLESS
Yes, Tinashe does have a nice voice and yes there are a fair amount of head nodding pop numbers, but once again it was an experience that left me feeling largely indifferent. It checks all the boxes for what a pop album should have but misses out on the soul and personality needed to make it really stand out.

Kali Uchis - Isolation | Reactions | LIVING LIFE FEARLESS
Despite the clear similarities to Amy Winehouse, Kali Uchis' music stands on it's own and it's a brilliant exploration of blues, funk, soul, R&B, and latin sounds, which she maneuvers through with impressive ease. Isolation is a breathtaking debut and a statement piece that shows she might just be music's next big thing.

You just want attention, you don’t want my heart
Maybe you just hate the thought of me with someone new
Yeah, you just want attention, I knew from the start
You’re just making sure I’m never gettin’ over you, oh
