Well this was unexpected…you can pretty much throw out everything you know about the Arctic Monkeys going into Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino – it’s a hard departure from practically everything they’ve created and become know for up until this point. And I found it pleasantly, pleasantly surprising. I’m sure that won’t be the same for everyone, and I’m sure it will be divisive amongst their fanbase, but I’ll be damned if you don’t applaud how daring it is. A casual listen this is not, right from the start we’re transported to a sort of conceptual, romanticized, ’70s-esque space opera. It’s very Bowie-like, especially on the opening tracks. It’s an artistic piece of music that’s abstract in everything from its loose, meandering narration, to its retro-futuristic soundscape full of spacey synths and vintage instrumentation. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino can be best described as hallucinogenic lounge music that’s left-field, inventive, and smoldering. A highly unexpected direction from an established band that could’ve easily played things safe, but instead chose to take major risks that paid off in one of their most exhilarating albums to date.

Solid stoner fare fit for your next bad trip. It was gnarly, but could be improved with more melodic range.

Lord Huron - Vide Noir Reaction | Reactions | LIVING LIFE FEARLESS
Lord Huron's latest is a beautiful nighttime blend that's at times cinematic in nature - with the best way of describing it is as psychedelic sci-fi folk western. They may not be as commercially or critically recognized as say a Bon Iver, but they're quietly putting together an impressive discography and Vide Noir is further evidence that they're one of the most interesting acts in folk.

Jack White - Boarding House Reach | Reactions | LIVING LIFE FEARLESS
Although Boarding House Reach is probably Jack White's most experimental project yet, there's heavy influences from blues, country, and most surprisingly funk, with entire songs dedicated to said genres, he still keeps that sincere approach to his music. All in all, it was an unexpectedly experimental album that's a mixed bag of good and bad, but the good largely outweighs the bad.

I just wanted to be one of The Strokes
Now look at the mess you made me make
Hitchhiking with a monogrammed suitcase
Miles away from any half-useful imaginary highway
I’m a big name in deep space, ask your mates
