Everybody’s favorite ‘sad girl’ has popped back up again with her first single, “Mariners Apartment Complex,” from what we assume is an upcoming album. The song and video still keep those old school aesthetics and melancholic feel that we’ve all come to expect from Lana Del Rey but the song sounds folkier than what we’ve gotten from her before. At this point a Gorillaz video is as easily recognizable as anything out there and though they went with a mix of live-action for their last video, “Tranz,” keeps with their usual fully animated ways and the trippy, strobing visuals help hammer home the trance-inducing nature of the song itself. It’ll basically be impossible for Hozier to ever top the magic that was “Take Me To Church,” but he’s still plugging along and his latest, “Nina Cried Power,” doesn’t stray too far from that gospel driven formula of his biggest song yet.
Eminem has been on a tear with Kamikaze and returns right back with its second video, “Lucky You.” It’s one of our favorites off the project and it’s dope to see Joyner Lucas getting some of that mainstream shine. The message of the video is a well trodden trail of his as he takes shots at all his mini-mes and ‘stans’ out there. Despite killing all hype and momentum for her admittedly better-than-expected Queen album, Nicki Minaj’s “Barbie Dreams” was a real highlight from the project and maybe one of the best remixes ever of a Biggie song. The video for it however was kind of ‘meh.’ She had a real chance to do something noteworthy with the nature of the song as it is, but instead we got the typical gratuitous shots of Nicki showing off her ‘goods’ and a few knock off crank yanker puppets.
