Tyler, The Creator may be cooking up something new but before we get anything from that he revisits his last project with a visual for “SEE YOU AGAIN.” The song itself was a standout from the album and the aesthetics of the video for it really capture that whimsical feel of the song. Not to mention that the whole thing looks like something straight from a Wes Anderson creation. Tyler has always been underrated in my books but he’s really be flexing those creative muscles as of late. Twenty One Pilots are back once again with their third single and video from their forthcoming album. It’s super bassy and the most hip-hop out of all of their singles so far. It’s vastly different from what we’ve gotten so far but we dig it. The video stays in the same vein of the last ones but it’s the most “performancey” and less narrative driven. I feel like it’s been a while since we’ve gotten anything real original from the hip-hop teddy bear, DRAM, but “Best Hugs” is a solid return though with its funky grooves and the ’70s era video, which is of quite possibly the world’s worst swingers party, brings the song to life perfectly and really shows off the comedic aspect of his music.
Vic Mensa must really love The Warriors because he is still riding those ’80s punk vibes real hard. But for as ‘radical’ as he tries to be in the visual department, his music still hasn’t left much of an impression. “Reverse” feels like just another generic radio record that could belong to any ‘fill-in-the-blank’ rapper out there. Travis Scott made a big statement with ASTROWORLD and while we’re kind of surprised that “STOP TRYING TO BE GOD” is the first song to get the video treatment, it kind of makes sense. It’s directed by Dave Meyers, the mastermind behind Kendrick’s “HUMBLE.” video and Ariana’s “God is a woman”, so you just know you’re about to get some trippy visuals. And that’s exactly what we got; a fire breathing bird/bull hybrid, a literal golden Kylie, and Travis playing a demigod of sorts. It’s a video chockful of subliminal and deeper messaging and full of not so subtle religious overtones. It’s crazy but mesmerizing and it changes the way you experience the song.
