This past week has seen the return of a number of big name acts back to the scene starting with twenty one pilots and their new single, “Jumpsuits.” The song starts out on a pretty raucous note then strips back to a more subdued affair before kicking things back up to an 11. Not completely sold on the song just yet but the video, which is pretty out there, continues their great use of aesthetics with clean shots and great color contrasting. Believe it or not, the Black Eyed Peas actually started out as a more conscious group and as of late they’ve seemed to be getting back more to those roots. They keep that trend going with their latest video, “Get It”, which is their socially charged take on policing in America. I actually like this more thoughtful sound from them and the video, while not bringing a whole lot new to the conversation, is full of really strong imagery. Ariana Grande has been on a really strong run leading up to the release of her next project and she’s come through again with (in my books) her strongest set of visuals yet. The imagery is striking and the messaging behind all the visuals really drive home the song’s theme of female empowerment.
After a lengthy time away, Mac Miller is back, and his signature messaging of positivity and self-love feels more timely than ever. The song is a whole vibe and the Kill Bill inspired visuals while simple, matched that vibe perfectly. Rolling Papers 2 just dropped seemingly out of nowhere and after the first couple listens, the album titled single was one of our immediate favorites. The video for it though was a clear result of Wiz Khalifa wanting to show off his newfound martial arts skills in an unexpectedly action-packed affair. We’ll never get used to seeing our friendly neighborhood weed head throwing kicks and punches but the video is a fun watch and the song is a dope groove (no pun intended).
