This week’s roundup was absolutely chock-full of new notable music videos, so much so that I had to intentionally leave some off of the list. The biggest surprise out of all of the videos this past week had to belong to Lil Jon. I legit thought I was reading the title wrong as we haven’t had an original sighting from the once ubiquitous producer/rapper in well over a decade. But that’s just what we got, and just in time for summer. The song is more in line with his new club DJ lifestyle than the crunk he made famous but it’s a monster banger nonetheless and the video for it is trippy AF. Summer pool parties here we come. Keeping with the trippy visuals, Run The Jewels have teamed with Adult Swim and the creators of Rick and Morty (sooo Season 4 2020?) for what’s essentially a 3 minute episode that I can’t help but hope becomes canon. Rick and Morty and Run The Jewels, what more could you possibly want!? Lil Dicky also keeps his winning streak of videos alive with another hilarious one, this time for his latest Chris Brown-assisted single, “Freaky Friday.” As the title suggests they pull a, well…”freaky Friday” and swap bodies, and in true Dicky fashion, between the lyrics and what’s playing out on screen, it’s laugh out loud funny. Never thought I’d ever see Lil DIcky and Chris Brown doing dance choreography together, but now that’s all I can see.
I’ve been a real gamer since damn near birth so anything with 8-bit/16-bit retro visuals automatically warrants a watch from me. Jean Grae took that a step further and turned her song “ZERO” into a full blown game (albeit unplayable) pulled straight from the original Nintendo days, complete with the classic Game Over screens, and it’s f*cking awesome to say the least! This hit me right in the nostalgic feels and put a gigantic ass smile on my face that lasted the video’s entire run time. Last but not least, Imagine Dragons released an 11-minute mini-movie for their song “Next To Me.” And in that amount of time it was actually able to tell a pretty engaging story that brought so much more meaning and emotion to the song itself.
