Video Roundup 2/4/18

Video Roundup 2/4-2/10

Maroon 5 has had their fair share of strange as hell videos for their songs off their last surprisingly good album and their video for “Wait” is no different. Although I’d say unlike the others, this one actually makes some sort of sense with a clear narrative through line. That is until missiles come raining down out of seemingly nowhere. Regardless, the song is my current guilty pleasure and how could it not be with a melody like that. Paramore has been killing it with their videos for their last album, and they keep that going with “Rose-Colored Boy.” There’s something about throwback visual effects and aesthetics that always appeal to me and they absolutely nailed the ’80s feel of their Anchorman-esque network TV inspired video. The song is whatever, but the video delivers. Sting and Shaggy!? Who knew that’d be a thing in 2018 but I’m here for all of it. Sting is a bonafide legend and Shaggy’s still got it in this island inspired song and video.

Drake season must be upon us because he’s back to his wave riding ways, this time with buzzing Memphis rapper BlocBoy JB, and I’m not mad it because this song is hard as hell! Besides, anything that’ll get Drake back actually rapping and dancing, I’m all for. Kendrick Lamar and SZA have released their anticipated video for the first single off the Kendrick curated/produced Black Panther accompanying album, and much like his previous videos for DAMN., the effects and visuals are on point. The amount imagery and symbolism present are through the roof and the video captures those Black Panther vibes perfectly without having to explicitly say it’s for the movie. My favorite video from this roundup is without a doubt J.I.D’s video for “EdEddnEddy.” If that name automatically floods you with nostalgic memories then wait til you catch a glimpse at the video and it’s art style. Clearly influenced by that infamous ’90s cartoon classic, it’s like the ‘hood’ version, and matching it with the throwback sound of the song itself put one big ass smile on my face – as I’m sure it will countless others out there.
