“Gonna Love Me” is definitely one of the standouts off Teyana Taylor’s K.T.S.E and she’s given it new life with the remix we never knew we needed. It’s not quite on Meth and Mary levels, but the Wu are always a prime choice for an R&B crossover. The video is simple, but has that NY energy and if nothing else, the remix shows why the Wu-Tang really are forever. Avril Lavigne is still gearing up for her semi-return album with its second single, “Tell Me It’s Over”, and it’s an unexpectedly soulful record that feels from yesteryear. I don’t know if it’s because the sound is so far from what she’s most known for or what, but the song comes off as more of a cover than an original composition and the video isn’t really anything to write home about either. Meh. Despite the viral hate Russ has received for the better part of the year, 2018 was really a landmark year for him and Zoo was a major step forward and one of our favorite projects of the year, with “Missin You Crazy” being a real standout. It’s got that vibe of one of those early ’00s crossover hits and its success has obviously upped his budget with probably his most effects heavy video yet. We don’t know if it was intentional but the video is basically like a modern version of Aladdin’s “A Whole New World” and we dig it.
If there’s one thing Meek Mill is known for, it’s an epic intro and there’s not too many things more epic than a well utilized Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight” sample and that’s exactly what we got as he properly set the tone for Championships. The video is simple, yet effective as it captures the mood with some great use of lighting. “Echo” off Swizz Beatz’s Poison was definitely one of the best songs off the project and one of the best Nas songs we’ve gotten in some years – he fully got into his bag with a classic verse back from his camo jacket days. The lighting used in the video is next level stuff and whatever projection tech they’re using is spectacular. I wasn’t expecting much from the video but it turned out to be a visual spectacle.
