Adding their names to the growing lists of acts with a collaboration album, Travis Scott & Quavo give us their own version of the trend. It was an unexpected offering, but one that’s not too far fetched, as they have always been close friends and their styles and sounds aren’t too far off from one another. While it’s being advertised as a proper album it definitely feels more like a mixtape than a well thought out LP. There’s no real through line to the proceedings and feels merely like a collection of stuff they’ve recorded together over time. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, just nothing that’ll set the world ablaze. I did enjoy the general sound and vibe of the tape though, as I’ve always been more partial to Travis Scott’s sound than the Migos, and the production is clearly steered by the Houston native. It’s moody, dark, and full of some incredible vibes – classic Travis Scott formula. For what they may lack in pure lyricism both Travis Scott & Quavo have a great grasp on melody and have flows that you can’t help but get caught up in. Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho won’t make any of my end of the year lists but it’s worthy of more than a few spins and provided great turn up music for the holidays. I can’t ask for much more from the pair.
