The trailer for Hereditary is here and it looks batsh*t crazy

[dropcap size=big]I[/dropcap]t’s not often that a movie trailer leaves me absolutely speechless, so major kudos to any preview that’s capable of demanding silence. Even if it’s only temporary. Less than a week ago, A24 released the trailer for upcoming horror flick Hereditary and it did just that (it is possible that I muttered “What the fuck” under my breath).

Coming from a company that is the brains behind The Witch (which I still really need to watch) and It Comes At Night (which I did see, though you’d be better off watching the similarly sounding It Follows), it’s not that surprising that it has such an effect.

…from a company that is the brains behind The Witch…and It Comes At Night…it’s not that surprising that it has such an effect.

If you’ve been around for a while, you may remember that I paid $13 of my hard-earned dollars to gaze upon the freak show that is Darren Aronofsky’s Mother back in September.

In case you’re wondering, I think I’m still suffering from an acute case of cinematic PTSD.

So, it’s entirely fair that I was somewhat leery of Hereditary when I heard the first staccato pluck of a creepy-ass violin. I’m happy to report that’s basically where the similarities between the two came to a screeching halt.

A beast of its own

Trailers usually aren’t the best indicator of a fantastic film, as evidenced by great movies that seemed like busts based on their previews and vice versa, but something tells me that Hereditary is a whole different beast.

…the mere two minutes and six seconds of footage packs a walloping punch in the form of bird mutilation, meticulous dollhouse keeping, and what appears to be spontaneous human combustion…

Like with Mother, the casting for this film has me thoroughly intrigued, especially Toni Collette. I know she’s capable of weird, as I watched her portray a woman with dissociative identity disorder on United States of Tara back in the day, but I’m curious to see how she’ll approach the horror genre.

Honestly, I think she’s going to kill it. From beginning to end, the trailer had my pulse racing and my blood pumping – just how I like it.

The possibility of insanity is scary enough, but the inevitability or even inescapability of insanity? Totally terrifying.

There’s no such thing as time wasted in this trailer, as the mere two minutes and six seconds of footage packs a walloping punch in the form of bird mutilation, meticulous dollhouse keeping, and what appears to be spontaneous human combustion (it’s probably not, but the fact that spontaneous human combustion is a thing that exists also creeps me the hell out).

Oh, and bonus points for incorporating the aspect of heredity into a horror flick. The possibility of insanity is scary enough, but the inevitability or even inescapability of insanity?

Totally terrifying.

What a tease

And that’s just a scratch on the surface of the insanity that is the Hereditary trailer. While the trailer for Aronofsky’s Mother ended up being an amalgamation of the tamer (and quite truthfully, boring) bits of the film, I think that the trailer for Hereditary is a tantalizing yet satisfying glimpse at the horror that awaits us in June.

…already being billed as “the scariest movie of the year” or even “the most terrifying film in a long time,” and I think I can actually buy into the hype…

When critics speak in superlatives, I find it difficult to buy into their claims simply because they utilize said superlatives to the point of rendering them practically meaningless.

However, A24’s Hereditary is already being billed as “the scariest movie of the year” or even “the most terrifying film in a long time,” and I think I can actually buy into the hype this time around.

The final verdict will come on June 8th, but I have faith that perhaps those superlatives will find new meaning come summertime.
