The Soft Underground are considered the successors of touchstone ’90s grunge bands, and the NYC rock duo not only strive to live up to this resonant legacy, but also to continue the genre’s history altogether. Their newest single “Rachel” is an intense testament to that.
The song “Rachel” from the duo’s new LP Morning World is a fast-paced track that evokes Temple of the Dog vibes and a car chase film scene at the same time. The single’s distinctive rocky energy feels spontaneous and natural, yet anything but chaotic, it’s balanced on a very fine line that separates decent musicians from the masterful ones.
What makes for somewhat of a surprise, and a pleasant one at that, is the LP’s diversity of styles and vibes which are all still imbued with the grunge spirit in one form or another. A nice album for a grunge fan who wants to hear an eclectic mix of acoustic and rockier songs with snappy rhythms and quality singing.
