I had only become familiar with KAMI, the Chance the Rapper affiliated Chicago rapper, about a year ago and while I didn’t hear all that much of his music, everything I did, I liked – a lot. It was wildly different than what was being pushed in hip-hop and he showed a strong grasp on the artistry of creating music. I don’t know if Very Slight is just a one off, but he takes things in a far more familiar sounding direction this time, with the songs being comparable to a lot of this current ‘SoundCloud’ wave. It was a bit disappointing as I really liked what he was doing before but the new direction will likely get him more mainstream ears and while it’s more in line with the current popular sound, he does do it better than your average ‘SoundCloud’ rapper. I found myself bopping along with the songs more than once and he still shows that ‘it’ factor that could make him a real major player in music. Here’s to hoping this isn’t all we’ll be getting from him in the future though.
Assorted my new diamonds, they shinin’, that’s what I did (I swear I did)
Put some Flintstones, lookin’ like I take care of my kids (my kids)
They’re very slight, they’re very bright, yes, it’s lit
When they ask me, “How much does it really cost?” A bit– “A Bit”
