Kali Uchis is a name that I’ve seen popping up all over the place and she seems to be becoming a favorite of hip-hop artists in particular. I’ve liked practically everything she’s been on so I had to check out her debut album. I had never heard any of her solo offerings before so I had no idea what expect from her music, but damn I was taken aback. Tell me if I’m wrong (don’t really because I don’t care), but I’m getting some eerie Amy Winehouse vibes with her. That voice man! That voice is incredible and it’s got a deep, soulful richness to it that you wouldn’t expect from someone this young. Not to mention that she’s got a clear affinity for older music and has strong influences from blues, jazz, and funk. She’s definitely more mainstream pop than Winehouse, but the comparisons are clearly there. Despite the similarities though, her music definitely stands on it’s own and it’s a brilliant exploration of blues, funk, soul, R&B, and latin sounds, which she maneuvers through with impressive ease. Isolation is a breathtaking debut and a statement piece that shows she might just be music’s next big thing.
“Look me in my iris
I can read your silence
When everything is a riot
You’re my peace and quiet”
