I tried to get through Father John Misty’s last album, Pure Comedy, but I just couldn’t. It’s social commentary felt heavy-handed and overwrought with a sense self-seriousness that I just couldn’t get into. So I was reluctant to get into God’s Favorite Customer but I’m glad I did because it’s a strong departure from the direction of that last project. It’s a far simpler listen that’s stripped down and full of introspection. Yes there’s still social commentary but here it feels more natural and it’s expertly crafted. The instrumentation and compositions, while pretty simple, still sound phenomenal and are varied enough to keep the album moving forward, while the real focus is on his vocals and the songwriting – both of which are executed exceptionally well. The fact that Father John Misty can carry such a musically stripped down album with not much more than his vocals and some superb songwriting should say it all. It’s a stand out.
