So the year is 2018 and thereโs a highly limited, tour only, new album out there only available on cassette (yes you read that right), no streaming, no disc, and no vinyl. Yeah there was absolutely no way I wasnโt going to find a way to wrap my ears around this one. Iโm not super familiar with Deerhunter but given the super rare, niche quality of the tape itself, I figure itโs not much related to their main discography anyways.ย Double Dream of Springย is very clearly experimental, with many of the songs sounding like demos more than fully realized songs. In fact, the first side is all instrumentals, leading to some beautifully ambient music. The second side, includes some lyrics, but itโs all just as sprawling as the first side โ music without a clear purpose or message. But thatโs not a bad thing here, as it all feels intentionally vague and avant-garde.ย Deerhunter have crafted an ambiguous collection of songs that serves as art as much as it does as music and thereโs some great experimental stuff here but itโs definitely not for everyone.
O, Sabbath rest of Galilee!
O, calm of hills above
Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee
The silence of eternityโ โSerenity 1919 (Ives)โ
