Black Milk โ€“ FEVER Reaction

Community Rating0 Votes

Iโ€™ve only ever known Black Milk to be a producer. Thanks in large part to some fantastic instrumental tapes, but it wasnโ€™t until recently that I learned that he is and has in fact always been a rapper as well. Thatโ€™s not a knock on him though, as I just assumed that since heโ€™s such an exceptional producer that all his focus has been put into that. Withย FEVER being my first project of his where Iโ€™ve heard him handling both aspects, I canโ€™t help but notice the similarities between him and Odisee, another producer/rapper with an affinity for live production. Itโ€™s this very use of live instrumentation that really makes his sound stand out from everything else out there, thereโ€™s just a soul and intimacy to his production that a machine could never replicate. โ€œDiVEโ€ in particular is phenomenal and I wish I could get a full track of that ending salvo on โ€œLaugh Now Cry Laterโ€ โ€“ his use of African drums on here is inspiring and sounds like itโ€™d make one hell of a song. I consider him to be one of the torchbearers of the pure essence of hip-hop and the way he melds in jazz and neo-soul influences is unlike anyone else out there. He may just be a serviceable lyricist but heโ€™s earnest with it and when paired with his strong production, it makes it more than worth a listen or 2 or 3.

Skyzoo - In Celebration Of Us | Reactions | LIVING LIFE FEARLESS
Skyzoo dropped off a fully realized project that's a complete celebration of blackness, fatherhood, and community; and while it's overall tale is a small, personal affair, the way he paints the picture makes it feel like a much grander journey and by the ending's heartfelt revelation I found myself fully invested. Add to that an ridiculous pen full of rewind worthy gems and phenomenal production makes this a top tier hip-hop album that must be heard.

Jaron Lamar Davis - My View Through the Lens of Music | Reactions
Jaron Lamar Davis' debut album is smooth and crisp and left me with a much deeper appreciation for all the nuances of jazz as a genre and it's an album I find myself throwing on often to really unwind. The drumming doesn't always take center stage but when it does it's exceptional.

Oddisee - The Iceberg
The Iceberg is yet another very strong release from Oddisee with some great sounding live instrumental hip-hop with a thoughtful, socially conscious message.

โ€œYou out for the money, make your wealth
Move silent, donโ€™t waste your breath
Do better โ€™cause they never taught us stocks and bonds
Only taught designer clothes, gold chains rocking charms
So I hardly paid attention, in my hood you feel the tension
Well Iโ€™d rather make it flipping than to go pay a tuitionโ€
