SMH. Jay-Z just can’t let Nas live huh!? I’m not saying it’s intentional, but it feels petty nonetheless. Just one day after Nas’ long awaited release, Beyoncé & Jay-Z surprise dropped their long rumored joint album. Everything Is Love feels like a culmination of both 4:44 and Lemonade and stays in that same stylistic and personal range. They’re not quite an open book but they do give a closer glimpse at their personal lives and marriage than we’re used to getting. They address a lot of the rumors and news that have circulated about them over the past few years even if it’s still in a relatively vague way, Jay-Z throws even more subliminals, and Beyoncé sounds surprisingly great rapping. The album feels much less cathartic and therapeutic than their last solo projects and it’s them coming out on the other side of it all. Sonically it’s as good as you’d expect from these two seasoned elite artists but I don’t think there’s anything here that’s mind-blowing or different than what we’ve heard from them before (mostly like throwaways from the Lemonade and 4:44 sessions). Everything Is Love doesn’t push either one of them artistically but it answers a lot of questions and lives up to their high musical standards.
