Ty Segall is a musical machine and his unrelenting work rate is impressive to say the least. Back with yet another project for 2018 he finds himself teaming up with White Fence, who Iโm not real familiar with but with whom he has a clear synergy with as they bounce off one another throughย Joyโs 15 tracks. Like most of Ty Segallโs projects, thereโs a layer of dust that lays on his songs that give them all this homemade feel and quality that lends his music a feel of authenticity that canโt be replicated. The album as a whole feels made up of big contrasts โ extremely low moments followed by extremely high moments, dueling instrumentals and vocal harmony, and vice-versa. Itโs about as psychedelic and experimental as rock gets, with every track bringing itโs own feel and vibes to the proceedings, but because of its intention, things donโt feel convoluted, they just feel like one wild trip (which Iโm assuming is the point).ย Joy is not a โcleanโ project thatโs easy to listen to or follow along with, but, it is a hell of an (albeit chaotic) experience that delivers some great psychedelic rock.
