Best of the Month: July 2018

Best of the Month is decided by a number of different variables; voter counts from preceding posts, reader reaction ratings, gut feelings, and lots and lots of heated discussions.

Album of the Month

The Internet - Hive Mind | Reactions | LIVING LIFE FEARLESSAmidst this raucous summer of new music that was full of big headlines, more than a couple ‘beefs’, long-awaited music from icons, and more projects than one could conceivably predict, The Internet found a nice ‘quiet’ opening to release their long anticipated follow up to Ego Death. It was a nice change up from the louder sound that had been dominating the airwaves, and their funky, soft soul grooves felt as tight as ever. It wasn’t a major departure from what we heard last go around but they’re becoming masters of their craft and all the breakdowns, Syd’s silky smooth vocals, and bouncy rhythms all combine to make one hypnotically good listen and one of the biggest sleepers of the summer.

Video of the Month

Ariana Grande has been on a real tear leading up to her next full length, and while everything she’s released so far has been noteworthy, nothing has been as impactful as her video for “God is a woman.” While the song itself is an already powerful ode to women and female empowerment, the Dave Meyers (of “HUMBLE.” fame) directed visual took things to a literal whole other level. From the impressive colors and cosmic effects to the relentless, yet tasteful sensuality, and powerful imagery and allegory that runs throughout the entirety of the video, it’s one of the strongest set of visuals for the year not just the month. And probably the strongest video she’s made in her career.

Trailer of the Month

Jonah Hill has had a one hell of a career and he’s finally making his big directorial debut with a loving ode to everything ’90s, the decade that shaped much of who he is today. So of course it’s a coming-of-age story, of course there’s skate boarding, of course there’s Wu-Tang, and of course it’s being produced by A24. It looks to really capture the vibe of that decade with everything from the wardrobes to the hazy VHS film quality and the story of pre-teen angst and trying to find your way is something most all of us can relate to. We’re excited to see what Hill’s capable of behind the camera and from the first look we’re given, it looks like a hell of a lot.
