Best of the Month: January 2018

Best of the Month is decided by a number of different variables; voter counts from preceding posts, reader reaction ratings, gut feelings, and lots and lots of heated discussions.

Album of the Month

Ty Segall - Freedom's Goblin | Reactions | LIVING LIFE FEARLESSTy Segall continues to break the rock mold with one of his most ambitious and wide ranging projects yet. We already knew about how prolific of a guitarist he was but you really get a glimpse at his mad genius on Freedom’s Goblin as he explores everything from psychedelic rock, to metal, to power-pop, and all while making it all feel like his own. In lesser hands it might feel disjointed or convoluted but he somehow managed to bring it all together to form a complete, cohesive project while still allowing room for each song to stand out on its own. The first truly great album of 2018 and one that should be checked out ASAP.

Trailer of the Month

When you see a movie title like The Death of Stalin you expect some heavy, drama-filled period flick not an aggressively funny dark comedy from the minds behind Veep. Satire films have all but gone the way of the dinosaur and I can’t remember the last truly great one but this looks like it has all the right ingredients to change that – an absolutely fantastic cast and sharp dialogue that doesn’t need to force it’s way to being funny. If this is only what they’re showing in the ‘greenband’ trailer, we can only imagine how raucous the final cut will be.

Video of the Month

It’s an absolute shame that Jay-Z got shutout from this year’s Grammys because 4:44 was truly something special from an artist who after all these years is still able to present himself in new and exciting ways. And the videos from that project have been nothing less than spectacular. The video for “Family Feud” is absolutely chock-full of big names but the real star is the dope story of family and legacy it was able to convey in only 7 minutes. The muted Shakespeare-esque opening scene alone makes us want to see more of this tale and the juxtaposition of the past and the future in it’s story and visuals is eye-popping. When the song finally does kick in with his timely and forward looking lyrics, it drives it all home.
