Video Roundup 7/9-7/15

We’ve got a pretty interesting collection of videos to talk about this week. With some faces we’ve become real accustomed to and some faces we haven’t heard from in a really long time. There’s videos from Jay-Z, Kesha, Travis Scott, Coldplay, Major Lazer, and more. Check out everything I rounded up below, along with my reactions.

The Cool Kids – Checkout

When did The Cool Kids make a comeback??? Now that I think about it, they were wayyy ahead of their time with their style and trendy raps. Look around now, and you’ll see stuff they were doing 9 years ago. I don’t know why they stepped away from music or why they’re now trying to come back, but I’m curious to see if they try to get ahead of the trends again or stick to the now mainstream style they helped bring to the forefront. From this video it seems to be the latter, which is a bit disappointing but that beat does go hard as hell.

Russ – Got This

Russ has really been enjoying all the fruits of his labor lately and he’s not been above letting the whole world know. He’s back stunting again, taking private jets, popping bottles, and flaunting stacks of cash. I’ll never tell someone not to have fun, and nobody deserves it more than him but I hope he gets it out of his system sooner than later, because I liked him to begin with because he was different than other rappers, not doing the same. However, “Got This” was one of my favorite songs off the album, and lends itself to this type of stunting.

Majid Jordan – One I Want

The OVO signees have teamed up for one of the best songs I’ve heard from either act. They really sound good together and the song has some great vibes. The video has the usual washed out aesthetics, full of neon and a smoky haze. I wouldn’t be mad if they collaborated more often.

Kesha – Woman

Kesha’s in full on come back mode and she’s back with her second single from what I can only assume is her next album. It’s a poppy country tune that has a pretty good feel to it. I can’t say I love her whiny, raspy singing voice but overall the song is a pretty good follow-up that shows flashes of what made her such a hit the first go around.

Coldplay & Big Sean – Miracles (Someone Special)

I’ve been a pretty big Coldplay fan, but I can’t say that I love their newer stuff, it’s all become a bit too pop and radio aiming for my liking. “Miracles” continues that trend but I can’t deny it’s infectious qualities. No matter what, they do make great music. I didn’t expect a collaboration with Big Sean but it sounds like a natural pairing and the video is a well executed jab at America’s recent immigration back and forth with some great moving portraits.

Wale – Fine Girl

I’ll go out on a limb and say that SHINE hasn’t performed nearly as well as Wale probably hoped. It definitely had it’s shortcomings but there were some strong moments on there. I wouldn’t put “Fine Girl” in that category, but it’s a decent enough island song for this over saturated time. The video however, feels like they’ve shrunk his budget because the quality is very amateurish.

Major Lazer – Know No Better

Now this is great use of those island vibes, and of course it’d come from Major Lazer who are a big reason why island music is as big as it is now. It’s just a great song and one that sounds even better in the clubs, they really know how to make these different collaborations work to their max potential. The video tells a cool little story as well.

Future – My Collection

It’s hard to follow Future’s music schedule at times, as he puts out so much music sometimes you can’t tell what’s old and what’s new. But this time he revists HNDRXX for one of my favorite songs off the album, and probably it’s most understandable. The video is VERY NSFW as he brags about the collection of women he’s acquired over the years. So watch at your own discretion.

Everything Is Recorded – Close But Not Quite

I’m not sure who’s song this is or where it’s going to land, but I’m all for more Sampha! As usual his voice is incredible and anytime you put that man with a piano you’re gonna get something good. The video is pretty dope as well. It’s trippy the way they bring 2d images to life as 3d renderings and they make great use of different angles and perspectives.

JAY-Z – 4:44

https://youtu.be/MOcdhQ9KfJA

4:44 is the most talked about album of the year, only behind maybe Kendrick Lamar and DAMN. but rightfully so, since Jay had a lot to say. In particular, on the song “4:44”, where he addresses a number of topics, including his infidelities and marital problems. The video’s an interesting mashup of clips and interviews of black people from all across the internet. It’s not entirely clear what message he’s trying to convey with this selection of clips, but it’s definitely interesting.

Playboi Carti – Magnolia

“Magnolia” has become a certified sensation, thanks especially to social media and memes, and it’s finally gotten an official video for it. It’s a kitchen sink kind of approach as it’s all over the place and there’s cameos from across the board. Not a great video, but we all know we’re all here for the beat anyways. Is it too late to get an official Wayne video?

Travis Scott – Butterfly Effect

I have a new found appreciation for Scott’s latest single after watching him perform it live on Kendrick Lamar’s The DAMN. Tour. The video didn’t get me quite as hype as that live performance but it’s still pretty lit, with dirt bikes, trippy visuals, and a flame spewing golden Lamborghini. When it comes to creating a vibe, not many are better at it then Travis Scott. Pure hype.
