There was a wealth of new video releases this week led by Selena Gomez’s buzzed about single, “Fetish.” Taking the page out of a lot of pop stars books these days she grabs Gucci Mane to grab some of that urban appeal and show she’s no longer that innocent little Disney girl. It’s such an obvious ploy that I couldn’t help but chuckle throughout, but song wise it’s still solid. Kesha returns with her third video in so many weeks along with JAY-Z, Ne-Yo tries his hand at a comeback, and Future, accompanied by Nicki Minaj, returns with one of my least favorite songs off HNDRXX. Somehow Jaden Smith continues to put out music that I actually want to hear, this time with a song that sounds like a mix between Kanye’s “Black Skinhead” and Cudi’s “Surfin'”. Action Bronson continues to be possibly the funniest act in hip-hop with a ridiculous 70’s era kung-fu music video as the last entry in the Blue Chips series is finally about to drop.
It’s inspiring to see Meek Mill still paying tribute to the late Lil Snupe, I’ll never get tired of all these Snupe loosies (he really had it). Skrillex released an oddly mesmerizing video for the equally trance like song “Would You Ever”. But the real star of the week is Kendrick Lamar (surprise surprise), with yet another surreal music video for “LOYALTY.” that’s chalk full of all kinds of symbolism and imagery that holds a deeper meaning than what’s on the surface. At this point, I’m just ready to hand 2017 over to him, musically and visually he’s been far and above anyone else that’s come out this year. DAMN. season continues. Just don’t be surprised to see some idiots trying to reenact that ledge scene at some point in the future. Check out everything I rounded up below, along with my reactions.
