Video Roundup 4/9-4/15

Coming off a relatively quiet last roundup, this week’s didn’t disappoint with a ridiculous amount of new music videos from the likes of Chris Brown, Lil Dicky, Toro Y Moi, Wale, Major Lazer, and much more. Check out everything I rounded up below, along with my reactions.

KAMI- Scene Girl

I was first introduced to the Vic Mensa affiliate with his wonderfully retro last video for “Home Movies.” I loved the whole 80’s feel and aesthetics of the song and video. I thought it was a one off effort, but with “Scene Girl” it looks like it may just be what he’s going for with his music, or at least his upcoming album. Whatever the case may be I’m digging the feel of everything and love the neon and color palette of the video.

Toro Y Moi – Omaha

Anything In Return was my first introduction to Toro Y Moi and it was in pretty heavy rotation when it first dropped. I haven’t particularly loved his newer stuff but he’s still capable of making some really good stuff more often than not, like with this here. The video has a throwback feel to it before turning into some weird Seven Pounds inspired Rube Goldberg of death scene.

Denzel Curry – Goodnight

The XXL Freshman hits us with a fresh video before his first turn at the Coachella stage. I’m still not completely sold on the young MC; some stuff I really love, but some stuff I just can’t connect with. “Goodnight” happens to fall into that former category and the video is a nice look at the projects through the eyes of a child, seeing both the good and ugly of that environment. It’s surprisingly uplifting, despite it’s serious imagery.

Logic – Black SpiderMan

Logic is really going all in on this message of equality, racial harmony, love, and peace with his next album. While this direction could come off as corny or a bit forced, I think he actually handles these themes pretty well, and it doesn’t hurt that he raps as good as he does. I could definitely see this getting play on the radio and that’s a positive thing. The video is basically what Pepsi wish they would’ve done. Better leave those Kardashians/Jenners alone lol.

Chris Brown – Privacy

I’ll continue to say that despite how you may feel about Chris Brown as person, I personally think he’s a huge douche bag, it’s hard to argue that he’s easily one of the best entertainers in this day and age. Musically he just gets it; “Privacy” is yet another fire song from the troubled singer. He does his usual Jackson impression in this one and there’s a plethora of bad ones in lingerie. He’s just got “it.”

Feist – Pleasure

The Canadian indie-pop singer finally looks poised to return to music with a new solo album. I’ve only ever heard a couple of her earlier works, but she gives me heavy vibes of Florence Welch, or probably vice-versa. I’m really feeling this first single, the video however, not so much.

NxWorries (Anderson .Paak & Knxwledge) – Scared Money

Guess who just announced an upcoming remix album to one of my favorite projects of 2016! That’s right NxWorries is planning on bringing even more heat to something that was already so fire. They give us a little preview of that towards the end of the video, but before that, they go full on Paid In Full for one of my favorite songs off their last project, “Scared Money.”

Major Lazer – Run Up

It’s hard not to love Diplo and Major Lazer. They are a major reason why island music is as big as it is today so it only makes sense they show why they do it better than most everybody else out there. This is another certified hit that’s sure to get the party going. Sadly, the video is a pretty accurate depiction of a typical party these days with everyone’s faces glued to their screens.

Wale – Fashion Week

It seems like no matter what he does, Wale just can’t seem to break out of that fringe star status. Most of his work always falls into either that “damn that’s fire” or “yawn” category. I have yet to hear a consistent body of work that’s fire. With that being said, “Fashion Week” is definitely in that “damn that’s fire” category. That bounce is incredible and it would’ve been amazing if he would’ve gotten Pharrell on this. The video is all fashion chic of course; I’ve been liking what I’ve been hearing off Shine.

Ludacris – Vitamin D

Ludacris is following in the footsteps of a lot of his generational peers in ditching their record labels to go the independent route. While it will grant him much more creative freedom, it’s yet to be seen if that’ll jump start his career again. The fact that the “Thong Song” is now being sampled makes me feel incredibly old all of a sudden, and while it’s a cool song, it does feel a bit generic and underwhelming. Luda’s always had some of the funniest visuals in hip-hop and he keeps that going, CGI abs and all. Once again, is there no album Ty Dolla $ign isn’t on? Serious question.

Lil Dicky – Pillow Talking

Speaking of Luda, Lil Dicky might be what you’d get if Ludacris and Weird Al had an offspring. He’s comical, but can actually spit. He already hit us with one of  the least expensive videos ever made now he’s returned with one of the most expensive. Coming in at an eye-opening $700,000, he visually brings to life all the crazy shit in head during a late night conversation after a one night stand. If nothing else, he’s one of the most entertaining people in music and this is one of the funniest videos I’ve seen in a long time.
