Video Roundup 4/16-4/22

We’ve got a pretty eclectic range of videos for this week’s roundup, featuring new drops from Rick Ross, Mac Miller, Paramore, Zayn, Nicki Minaj, a second offering from Kendrick Lamar, and much more. Check out everything I rounded up below, along with my reactions.

Mac Miller – Cinderella

It’s been nearly half a year since Mac Miller dropped his surprisingly dope conceptual album, The Divine Feminine. Not ready to move on just yet, he’s dropping one more visual for the project; this time for “Cinderella” which sees Ty Dolla $ign racking up yet another guest feature. It’s getting ridiculous at this point. It’s a 12 minute short film that sees Mac showing up to some sort of underground party in search of his Cinderella. I’m not entirely sure what the concept was for the video as things take a sharp turn for the worse before he finds himself crooning solo in a red room. But I love the song and this album.

A.CHAL – To the Light

I stumbled onto A.CHAL’s debut project, Welcome to GAZI, late last summer and it’s been in pretty steady rotation ever since. He’s another one of those lo-fi, moody, alternative R&B acts but his music is high enough quality to separate it from the pack. I don’t know if “To the Light” is from an upcoming project but I’m liking what I’m hearing, it looks like he’s going to continue those strong vibes he had on his debut. The video finds him wandering throughout the desert and it has the same muted, lo-fi quality as his music. That song at the end sounds fire.

2 Chainz – It’s A Vibe

I’m presuming this is the first single off his oft-delayed Pretty Girls Like Trap Music. Featuring Trey Songz, Jhene Aiko, and Ty Dolla $ign (alright now, this is just sick) you can expect to hear some smooth tunes and for the most part he delivers on the title of the song. The video finds them all at varying establishments getting there vibes on with plenty of smoke, drinks, and women. He’s actually one of the more enjoyable trap rappers out there so I’m looking forward to the album.

Rick Ross – She On My Dick

Rick Ross had a comeback of sorts with his best album in years. It’s just too bad he chose to drop around Drake and Kendrick; I don’t think enough people will give it the listen it deserves. Not to be deterred, he’s right back with a video for one of the best street records off the album (which was the weakest parts of the album to me). The video features Ross, Gucci Mane, Young Dolph and others in a strip club surrounded by “working” girls, so needless to say this video is NSFW.

Nicki Minaj – No Frauds

Soooo she’s really trying to force this down our throats huh? Following what was probably one of the lamest beefs in recent memory, Nicki tried to pull a Drake and respond to Remy in a song aimed for the clubs. The only problem is that this song is garbage and that auto-tune is straight cringey. I’m sorry but not even Drake and Wayne could save this travesty. The video shows her going throughout London trying to convince us that she’s the Queen. Yeah that’s gonna be a no from me dog.

Zayn – Still Got Time

Now I’m sure I’ve heard a One Direction song before but I wouldn’t be able to tell you even if one was playing right now. BUT, I don’t live under a rock so of course I’ve heard about Zayn and the group’s break up. I could care less either way but I’m curious to see if he’s an actual good artist. From this first impression it’s not looking so good. Like every teen star in the history of music he’s trying to ditch that innocent persona with edgy visuals and a more bad boy aesthetic. This video is the definition of try hard and the song sounds like everything else out there. Hard pass for me.

Paramore – Hard Times

I legitimately didn’t even know they were still a band. They were never my speed but I remember them reaching their peak popularity mid-high school. Maybe I’m wrong but I remember them being more “punk” than this, this is definitely not. Sounds like some indie pop and I’m not really feeling it. If nothing else, the video has some great animation and sketching going on in it. Gives me some ideas for videos of our own.

JMSN – Where Do U Go

I’ve been listening to JMSN for some time now and he’s always been one of the more criminally underrated R&B artists out there. He continually puts out extremely solid projects and he looks poised to drop another one. “Where Do U Go” is his usual emotionally charged song and the gloomy visuals capture that feel of the song nicely. It finds him stalking following who I hope is his girl and there are some shots that made me immediately think of Elijah Wood in Sin City with those damn glowing eyes.

Morris Day- Over That Rainbow

Following a spectacular tribute to Prince at the Grammy’s, Morris Day shows us that he’s still got something left in the tank with a surprise video for what is another tribute to the late great singer. This is one of the best tributes I’ve seen yet and the visuals are very Prince-esque, which is no surprise seeing as he was essentially his mentor. Prince wouldn’t be mad at this one.

Kendrick Lamar – DNA.

I swear man, Kendrick Lamar can seemingly do no wrong. After putting the world into a frenzy with his damn near flawless album DAMN. (which sold over 600,000 copies by the way), shutting down Coachella, and making history on the charts, he’s right back at it with a video for DNA. One of the most aggressively satisfying songs I’ve ever heard from him and a song that’s been on constant repeat since the album dropped. The video features Don Cheadle getting possessed by the song and rapping the lyrics before releasing Kendrick from the interrogation to go full on Kung Fu Kenny with his partners. It’s a dope video, and I don’t think there’s much of a deeper, hidden meaning to the affairs but that won’t stop his fans from speculating.
