Video Roundup 3/5/17

Video Roundup 3/5-3/11

This past week was full of great new videos from the likes of Future, The Weeknd, Imagine Dragons, Tory Lanez, and much more. Check out everything I rounded up below, along with my reactions.

Future – Use Me

Future has had a really busy start to 2017 and after becoming the first artist ever to drop back-to-back number one albums in consecutive weeks, he doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon. This time hitting us with a video off the far superior HNDRXX, it features a huge cache of illicit money, a strong arm robbery, and what appears to be a young Future. Future season is upon us.

6LACK – Free

6LACK has been garnering quite the buzz these past few months after dropping the exceptional Free 6LACK mixtape. It’s a tape that’s been getting a lot of spins from me, with this song in particular being one of my favorites. The video is as dark and moody as the song itself, as it sees him trying to free himself from a bad relationship with a twist at the end.

Freddie Gibbs – Crushed Glass

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Gangsta Gibbs and he’s definitely had a lot more problems to worry about then dropping music, but he’s finally returned with a song and video to address his recent troubles. He’s a lot deeper than you might think for a “gangster” rapper. The video shows him stranded in the desert with the coordinates being of Austria, then waking up in a cell, a clear metaphor for his recent situation. Deeper than rap.

THEY. – What They Want

Besides hating the way these new artists are naming themselves, THEY. are actually a really dope group and their debut album shows some real potential. The video for “What They Want” makes use of the mirror within a mirror, within a mirror trick and uses it to cool effect. If you’re prone to motion sickness or epilepsy you may not want to watch though.

Imagine Dragons – Believer

The Imagine Dragons have a pretty good grasp on big, arena ready anthem rock and they’re back with another one that’ll sound amazing at a festival. Which I’m assuming is the lead single for their next album, it’s catchy as hell and you can never go wrong with a Dolph Lundgren appearance.

Tory Lanez – DopeMan Go

Tory finally drops a video from his dope pair of mixtapes he hit us with over the holidays. “DopeMan Go” is one of the more hype tracks of the pair so it’s no surprise he visited this one first. The video is typical rap video affair these days, a lot of quick cuts of girls, smoke, drugs, etc.

The Weeknd – I Feel It Coming

Daft Punk don’t come out of hiding all that often these days, so to be able to get them on his album not once but twice is a big thing for The Weeknd. “I Feel It Coming” is definitely my favorite of the pair of songs, that drum loop is crazy, and one of my favorite songs off Starboy. The video sticks to that retro type of feel most of his other videos from the project had and his clear Jackson influences are on full display, and we even get a Jhene Aiko sighting.

CyHi The Prynce – Nu Africa

After garnering a lot of buzz for his guest features on “Monster”, Cruel Summer, and a handful of dope mixtapes his run towards his debut seemed to stall out. However, it looks like his debut album will finally see the light of day this year, but not on G.O.O.D Music(?), and “Nu Africa” is one of the first offerings off the album. It’s a dope song and he’s a real lyricist with a message, but I still think he’s missing that “it factor” that will really make him blow. But I’ll take a steady stream of solid music any day.

dvsn – Hallucinations

Been almost a year but the promo for their tape is still going strong with another new video from the project. To me they’re one of OVO’s strongest acts and they might as well do a video for every song at this point. It’s a solid video about love, loss, and regret; typical themes of R&B.

JAHKOY – California Heaven

Toronto is really on a run right now, with JAHKOY being one of the latest from the city to start to get their shine. His last tape was really solid and shows he had something there. The video for “California Heaven” is pretty much an ad for everything someone from the other coast would love about California.

Talib Kweli & Styles P – Last Ones

Talib Kweli & Styles P joint album!?!? Whoaaa! When’d this get announced and where was I? Talib will go down as one of the most underrated MC’s of all time and although I hated the last project he was on, Styles is one of my favorite rappers to ever come out of New York. Can’t wait to hear how this one turns out.
