Video Roundup 2/19/17

Video Roundup 2/19-2/25

Another week down, another week’s worth of videos to roundup. I wouldn’t say there was anything spectacular this week but there were a lot of solid drops. We did get a new Lana Del Rey sighting (it’s been a while), along with some videos for their albums from Jidenna, Trey Songz, Migos, and Future. Check everything I rounded up below, along with my reactions.

Lana Del Rey – Love

Lana Del Rey has finally resurfaced after a lengthy hiatus and returned with a new offering off what I’m assuming is an upcoming album. “Love” has her signature sound that thrust her into the spotlight and her obsession with nostalgia continues as the video has heavy 60’s/70’s influences before (literally) taking off into space. A solid return.

Jidenna – Bambi

Hitting us with another video off his debut, The Chief, Jidenna plays the heartbroken partner trying to get his love back. “Bambi” is one of my favorite songs off the project and while the video isn’t anything to write home about, it’s serviceable. It’s clear we’ll never see him not suited up from head to toe, although he is the most disheveled I’ve ever seen.

Young Thug – Safe

Young Thug went the complete opposite direction than his last video for this one. It’s about as bare bones as you can get and I’m not sure where this one will end up but I’m assuming another forthcoming project. It’s typical affair for him with the real MVP being his producers. This won’t change your opinion about him, whether you like him or not.

Skepta – No Security

I gotta admit, if it wasn’t for Drake then I probably would have never known who Skepta was. Culture vulture or not, he put me on to his music, and Konnichiwa had some absolute bangers. This is my first time hearing “No Security” but it’s another absolute banger. The video’s interesting, with Skepta soft shoeing it throughout the affair in various rooms and situations.

Trey Songz – Playboy

I used to really like Trey’s music, especially the first two albums, but he’s started to lose his appeal for me, mainly falling back into the same generic formula that’s starting to feel outdating in today’s soundscape. Case in point, “Playboy”; an alright song but nothing new. I’ll need to hear something more than this to get me excited for another Trey album. The video however…if you like beautiful women, then you’re in for a treat.

Migos – Deadz

Migos continue to surpass my expectations. I never thought they could put together a complete album, but Culture was a very solid project that had some real heat, including this one. The video is dope as well, opening with an all black symphony, then seeing deceased presidents Franklin, Lincoln, and Jackson come back to after having money showered on them, brilliant.

Future – Draco

Future has been busy doing Future things; dropping two albums in the span of a week, he already has had a number of videos ready for the more ‘meh’ FUTURE project. “Draco” was one of the better songs off the album and he decides to play up the stealing other people’s girls before we see them go full on female hit squad on his competition. And yes there are Dracos in the video.

Like – Mushroom Cloud

For those that don’t know who Like is, he’s an extremely talented 1/3 of Pac Div and one of the more underrated producers from the left coast. He dropped the very dope Songs Made While High last year and he revisits that effort with a video for the opening track. It’s fully animated, with a dope 80’s animation style that sees a literal mushroom cloud engulf LA.
