This is going up much later than usual (thanks to some computer troubles), but it’s finally here and I’ve rounded up some good videos this week from big artists like Missy Elliott, Sampha, Rick Ross, Ryan Adams, and more. Check them all out below along with my reactions.
Missy Elliott – I’m Better
Missy is easily one of my favorite female artists of all time and I think her level of creativity when it comes to her music and videos has yet to be matched by anyone since. Not sure if she’s gonna follow through on her long talked about comeback but one can hope. “I’m Better” isn’t her best song but it’s still got a nice bounce to it and the visuals are classic Missy.
Post Malone – Congratulations
Say what you want about the guy, but for me he’s proved himself as more than just “White Iverson” with his surprisingly dope debut Stoney. “Congratulations” is yet another hit he’s got on his hands and one that gets the clubs jumping. The video isn’t anything to write home about, but it’s passable.
Terrace Martin – Oakland
Terrace Martin is a criminally overlooked musician out the West Coast that’s played a hand in a lot of big name projects, most notably probably being To Pimp A Butterfly. His last project, Velvet Portraits, was a very dope listen and “Oakland” was one of my favorite songs off the project. The video is a nice touch as it gives an intimate look at the Bay Area city that influenced the song.
Ryan Adams – Do You Still Love Me?
I’m not familiar with Ryan Adams and I just happened to stumble across this video, but I’m very glad that I did. “Do You Still Love Me?” is one of the best songs I’ve heard recently and it’s got this classic rock feel to it that seems to be a rarity these days. It’s dope stuff and the video really helps evoke that classic feeling even more. I’ll definitely be checking for his stuff from now on.
Sampha – (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano
Sampha is quickly becoming one of my favorite singer/songwriters out there today. His voice is incredible and Process is one of the best debuts I’ve heard in a while. “(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano” was definitely one of my favorites off the project, so I’m glad to see it getting it’s own video. More people really need to hear this man.
Rick Ross – I Think She Like Me
There’s no doubt that Rick Ross had a hell of a run, maybe 3 years or so, where everything he seemed to touch was fire. His ear for production is impeccable, especially with his earlier stuff, but I’ve found his last couple of projects to be highly underwhelming and I’ve started to lose interest. But if the rest of his upcoming album sounds anything like this here then he might just have it back. This is straight fire and the video matches that smooth feel just right.
Machine Gun Kelly – Dopeman
I don’t know exactly what it is but I actually like Machine Gun Kelly, I thought that he’d blow up bigger than what he is now, but signing to Bad Boy was definitely the wrong move. Now I think he’s free from that situation(?), so let’s see if he can get some of that momentum back. “Dopeman” is a good start, as it’s classic MGK and the video is surprisingly well shot with some crazy imagery.
Smoke DZA x Pete Rock – Black Superhero Car
I’ve always like Smoke DZA since I heard him on those earlier Curren$y tapes, he’s got that laid back, smooth music that you can ride out too. It took me a minute to get on the Don’t Smoke Crack album he did with Pete Rock, but it might be one of my favorite projects to come out last year. This is probably the highest budget video I can remember seeing from him, with all kinds of guest appearances, so I’m happy to see him shine.
Gallant x Tablo x Eric Nam – Cave Me In
Ollogy was such a dope, overlooked, album from the relatively unknown singer, Gallant. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’ll be one of the bigger names in music in the next few years, especially if he keeps putting out albums like that. I don’t know where this song is from or who the other two artists are, but his part was dope at least.
