Video Roundup 1/15/17

Video Roundup 1/15-1/21

It was a big week for new videos, as we got hit with all kinds of notable releases from artists like BANKS, Gorillaz, Future,  2 Chainz, Arcade Fire, and much more. Check them all out below along with my reactions.

BANKS – Trainwreck

BANKS hits us with a new video for one of the better songs off The Altar, and needless to say the video is…interesting. There’s guys in creepy rubber masks, awkward dancing, and all sorts of imagery and symbolism that might be trying to convey some deeper story or message. But like her music, I think it’s just there to try to be edgy.

2 Chainz – Good Drank

Easily one of my favorite 2 Chainz songs from last year finally gets the visual treatment. Basically it’s a poor man’s attempt at recreating the prohibition era, but instead of moonshine it’s all about that lean purple drank. I can’t lie, the video feels…off. I can see what they wanted to do, it just wasn’t executed. The song’s fire though.

Future – Poppin’ Tags

Looks like Future’s gearing up for another year full of projects after being relatively quiet towards the latter end of 2016. “Poppin’ Tags” is exactly the sound I think about when I think Future. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s nothing groundbreaking either. Even the video has that same ‘been here before’ feel to it, as Dubai is his unofficial second home at this point.

August Alsina – Wait

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the Louisiana singer after a very solid debut. “Wait” is an alright song, but not as impactful as I’d expect after so much time away. I think he’ll have to come back with something stronger to regain some of that buzz for his follow up. And just like the song, the video didn’t really leave me feeling any type of way about, good or bad.

Gorillaz – Hallelujah Money

Wow it’s been 7 years since Gorillaz have dropped anything new and somehow “Hallelujah Money” manages to be both unexpected and expected at the same time. Unexpected because it sounds so wildly different from their last major song and expected because they’ve always been known for their wild visuals. Filmed in Trump tower this is without a doubt, an indictment of the current political and social climate of the world and the US; complete with KKK imagery and all other types of wild scenes. Welcome back.

SiR – W$ Boi

It’s official! SiR is John Doe #2 and the latest signee to the incredibly talent filled TDE label. Serving as a celebration of that announcement (and possible single to an upcoming project?), “W$ Boi” is a fire song that shows exactly why he’s been signed. His highly slept on Her EP was an incredible project and if it’s any indication of what’s to come, then they’ve got another one on their hands.

Jeezy – Never Settle

He’s still pumping out visuals to Trap or Die 3 and this time it’s full of footage from his escapades in Vegas. So you know what that means, plenty of bottles, plenty of girls, and stunting abound. One of the best songs off the tape though.

Tunji Ige – Why Don’t You?

After his initial feature in one of my earlier roundups, I went back and acquainted myself with more of his work and I gotta say I’m a fan. Missed Calls was a dope project and looks like he’s almost ready to hit us with the follow up. This is only a short teaser video, but he’s still managed to pack it full of wild imagery.

Arcade Fire – I Give You Power

Not much of a music video in reality, just dancing lights and occasional shots of someone mixing, but somehow it works. I’m not much of a fan of a lot of their stuff, but I can get down with “I Give You Power”.
