There was a ton of new trailers to go through this week that ran the gamut from the kid-friendly Coco, to the ultra brutal Atomic Blonde, to the dramatic Megan Leavey. We also got our first look at the latest offereings from Oprah and Edgar Wright with The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Baby Driver respectively. Check out everything I rounded up below, along with my reactions.

Coco

Is it just me or am I getting heavy Book of Life vibes from this one. Hmm, it’s probably (somewhat) coincidental but there’s not a lot of movies about Mexico’s Day of the Dead out there so I’m sure I won’t be the only one to make that connection. With that being said, in Pixar I trust (outside of Cars), so there’s no doubt in my mind that they’ll do it justice.

 Megan Leavey

War movies can be a dime a dozen, so it can be refreshing when one comes along that focuses on a different aspect of the war than we usually see, and it doesn’t hurt that it happens to be based on a true story. It looks like a pretty intense and emotional story both in and out of battle so I’m intrigued.

Geostorm

Whenever I see ‘from the producer of Independence Day’ I know I’m about to see a whole lot of destruction porn. This time they’re trading in an alien invasion for man made natural disasters on an apocalyptic scale. Pure popcorn movie and one that’ll I’ll probably end up drunkenly watching on a stream two years from now.

Atomic Blonde

Hollywood has tried a couple times now to introduce a compelling female led action movie, the likes of Mission Impossible or Bond, but so far they’ve underwhelmed considerably. In large part to them trying to shoehorn them into a mold. This one looks like it could be the first legitimate winner and it doesn’t hurt when you have the always charismatic Charlize Theron as the lead. It looks fucking brutal; think Hit-Girl from Kick-Ass all grown up and a spy. Now that’s a movie I’ll go see.

Baby Driver

Seriously though who named this movie?? That title is just awful. Getting around the god awful name, this one actually looks like it could be fun version of Drive. There’s a lot of big names attached to this one, and seeing what Edgar Wright did with the brilliant action-comedy Hot Fuzz actually has me pumped to check this one out. Is it too late to change the name though?

Most Hated Woman in America

Netflix has made a lot, and I mean a lot, of money and they’ve been putting it to really good use (outside of the Sandler movies), creating some amazing original productions. They just seem to have a really good feel for content that few other companies possess. This one looks like it’ll be yet another winner for them with what looks like a compelling tale about religion, greed, and criminal activities.

Salt and Fire

Whenever I see the name Werner Herzog attached to a project, I know it’s gonna be something worthy of discussion, either good or bad. The prolific director isn’t afraid to take chances, and while we don’t get much from the trailer, I can tell from the little imagery we do get, that this will probably be bat shit crazy with some amazing shots and cinematography.

Buster’s Mal Heart

I can’t even begin to guess what’s going on in this movie. The trailer is all over the place and full of scenes that don’t look like they’re even from the same movie. It’s weird, decidedly so, and there’s not enough to go off of to decide if that’s in a good way or a bad way. But Rami Malek seems to be really good at playing those slightly ‘off’ characters and this one looks right up his alley.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

HBO Films huh? I don’t know if they’ve produced original films before (and I’m too lazy to look), but if they can carry that same insanely high quality they have with their series over to their movies then I’m pumped to see what they can come up with. This looks like a really interesting true story that I’ve never heard about it so they’ve got my attention, and it doesn’t hurt to have Oprah attached to it.
