Trailer Roundup 2/20/17

Trailer Roundup 2/20-3/5

This was a much busier week than last week’s which was full of a lot of indy films. While those are great and all, there’s still a lot more that are hit than miss. This week however, we got a much more balanced look at blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy, Alien: Covenant, and Pirates of the Caribbean, and much smaller scale films like Norman and The Dinner. Check them all out below, along with my reactions.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Hmm…not quite what I was expecting. In a time when every genre movie seems to be trying to take an ultra realistic approach it’s somewhat refreshing to see that this one’s going all in on the crazy. Do I think it’ll make a good movie? No, but I applaud the ambition.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Alright this will probably be the last trailer I watch for this movie (if I can help it) until it’s finally, finally released. The more they’re showing, the more I’m liking. Looks like it took everything great about the first one and dialed it up to an 11.

Norman

Looks like Richard Gere’s trying to make a comeback of sorts by doing those smaller, more intimate roles that awards shows seem to love. I’m not sure if this will be good, but Sony Pictures Classics has a pretty solid track record.

Their Finest

The timing’s a little ironic on this one, what with Christopher Nolan also having a movie centered around Dunkirk. This one however is more focused on the behind the scenes politicization and propaganda of the events. Between the two I’ll take Nolan’s, but that’s just my taste.

Alien: Covenant

It’s like they knew May was my birthday month because they’re dropping what I’m (desperately) hoping will be the first movie truly worthy of the Alien moniker since Aliens. So far everything looks good, but I won’t truly believe it until I’ve seen it. Pleaseeeee be good.

My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea

Let me say that this doesn’t interest me at all BUT, the animation and art style is so jarringly different from anything I’d expect from a movie, I figured I throw it on here. I’m sure there’s an audience for this somewhere, I just don’t think it includes me.

Sand Castle

Netflix is really taking this whole original film thing seriously. They’ve put out some seriously good and interesting movies with the cast to match. While the whole Iraq war movies are starting to wear a bit thin, this one looks like it might take a different approach to things.

The Dinner

Did I mention that Richard Gere is trying to make a comeback? I don’t think this will generate as much buzz for him as Norman, but it looks interesting enough to garner more than a few views. I’m a fan of politically charged dramas and thrillers, a la House of Cards, so I might check this one out myself.

The Promise

I don’t know anything about this conflict, or really even where it’s set, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that. But with a solid cast of Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale, I’m sure a lot more people will be. Looks a bit…sappy, but that’s not always a bad thing.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

You want to see a literal representation of ‘beating a dead horse’, then look no further than the Pirates franchise. I simultaneously can and can’t believe they’re making another one of these, but I guess as long as it still makes money they’ll make these. I have to say this looks strikingly similiar to the first one in the series (tell me those two aren’t Bloom and Knightley replacements). I guess they’re hoping everyone has a short memory or just don’t give af. I’m betting on the latter.
