Well it finally arrived. Netflix and Marvel’s own street level Avengers finally came together to fight the good fight. After the massive success of Daredevil and Jessica Jones and the announcement of two more super hero series in Luke Cage and Iron Fist, it was all but inevitable that this is what they were building to. At first I couldn’t have been more excited at the thought of them building another Marvel cinematic universe, albeit on the small screen, but as they kept adding pieces to the puzzle that initial excitement started to dissipate into disappointment. Thanks in large part to an awful Iron Fist series, so-so first season of Luke Cage, and a Jessica Jones season that despite all the critical praise, I just couldn’t get into. They were rushing The Defenders and it showed; I was hoping for the best but prepared for the worst.

…for a show about 4 heroes who all kick and punch shit to varying degrees, the fight scenes were wholly lackluster.

Well first things first, I’ve been highly confused by the praise the season has gotten from some critics. It left me wondering if we were even watching the same show. To put it bluntly, I was bored to tears throughout it’s entirety. The “big threat” they had been building up over the past couple of years was woefully oversold and The Hand, once seen as formidable opponents, were comically weak here; and I don’t just mean The Hand’s grunts, I’m talking about the so called bosses. We all know Marvel has a villain problem, and it wasn’t helped here with another poor use of a big name (Sigourney Weaver), but the movies have at least made up for that shortcoming with compelling and charismatic main characters (for the most part). Something this show had none of. They were all stripped down to their most basic elements without much room to really stand out, while much of the story’s main focus was on the least likeable one of the bunch, Iron Fist. Yet another terrible decision by people who clearly weren’t listening to the audience. Aside from the weak villains, plodding story, and boring leads, this show’s biggest problem was that for a show about 4 heroes who all kick and punch shit to varying degrees, the fight scenes were wholly lackluster.

These team-ups are supposed to be fun, every few year romps that bring out the best of each character and their stories. It’s supposed to be a spectacle that pays off the years of build up in big ways. Big ensemble pieces, like this, often struggle with story, but at the very least they’re generally enjoyable. Season 1 of The Defenders had none of these things going for it, making for one of the most disappointing and forgettable series to air this year and leaving a large blemish on Marvel’s otherwise fairly pristine recent record. I’m going to need a break from this cast of characters, there couldn’t be a better time to bring on The Punisher.

Iron Fist literally being the key to everything by needing him to punch through some wall was stupid as fuck.

Misty Knight finally lost her arm, so she’s one step closer to getting that bionic arm and really embracing her comic book roots.

Surprise, Daredevil survives (of course). I don’t know how and I’m sure the explanation (if they give one) won’t be good, but he’s finally about to meet his mother, setting up one of his best story lines from the comics.

Conclusion
Season 1 of The Defenders should have been a fun, hard-hitting romp that delivered on years of build up in a big way that would shape the Marvel/Netflix cinematic universe for years to come. Unfortunately what we got was a soulless, plodding season that under delivered in just about every way possible. Time to bring on The Punisher.
