AMC’s comic book adaptation, Preacher returned this year for Season 2, and after a debut season that left so many viewers and fans divided, they were under a lot of pressure to really deliver this go around. Not being a reader of the series, I thoroughly enjoyed Season 1 upon first viewing but looking back at it, some of it’s more glaring issues have become more obvious. Despite that however, I still think Season 1 (despite how slow it was at times) did a really good job of introducing the world they lived in and the rules they played by.

As always, if you haven’t seen the first season then there will be minor spoilers ahead, you’ve been warned. Season 2 picks up right after the closing events of Season 1 with the gang (Jesse, Cassidy, and Tulip) hitting the road in search of, quite literally, God, who has gone MIA from his throne in heaven. With a premise as crazy as this there’s no real need for subtlety and sure enough they throw all of that to wind in Season 2 and dive head first into all of the outlandishness present in the comics. That includes the instantly menacing, terminator-esque Saint of Killers, a surprisingly likeable Hitler (yeah the real one), a secret cult of violent religious fanatics that protect Jesus’ lineage, and the Tarantino level of copious violence, blood, and swearing they established in Season 1, but cranked up a whole ‘nother level or 5. And that’s just the tip of it.

It’s as funny and as sharp as any show on TV and beneath all the crudeness there’s biting (and almost all too real) commentary about religion and society that makes it impossible to call this show dumb.

A show this crazy and out there can only not overstay its welcome for as long as it’s writing allows it, and the writing on Season 2 is phenomenal. It’s as funny and as sharp as any show on TV and beneath all the crudeness there’s biting (and almost all too real) commentary about religion and society that makes it impossible to call this show dumb. Even with all the outlandishness of the world and characters the great acting really grounds things and keeps the show from becoming cartoonish. In short, Season 2 of Preacher is some of the best TV I’ve seen in the past 5 years and they really improved on every aspect of the first season. This is the show that nobody’s talking about and that’s a damn shame.

I appreciate trying to expand Cassidy’s backstory but Denis was a horrible addition to the show and even though the eventual killing of his son (who he turned into a vampire to keep from dying) was used to show his failures as a father, it should’ve happened about 4 episodes sooner. He became that unbearable.

YOOOOO, this show goes places I literally can’t believe sometimes. They literally depicted the direct living descendant of Jesus Christ as a mentally challenged abomination, the result of too much inbreeding. Name another major premiere cable show willing to go there.

Jesse seems to be losing control of his power the more he abuses it, I’m interested to see where things go for him in the future with Genesis.

I’ve come to the conclusion that there are no real heroes on this show. With the exception of Arseface, everybody else is a terrible, terrible human being. For as blatantly evil and morally bankrupt Herr Starr is, Jesse has done just as, if not more, f*cked up things as he has. I’ve never seen a show like this in my life, that’s an almost unimaginable risk they’ve taken and it’s made the show that much more interesting.

Conclusion
Season 2 of Preacher improves upon everything you loved about Season 1 and kicks the craziness to an even greater level. It's as funny and as sharp as ever thanks to some phenomenal writing, acting, and dialogue that keeps things grounded even in a world as outlandish as this one. In short, Season 2 of Preacher is some of the best TV I've seen in the past 5 years and it's a show that everyone should be talking about.
