Just when I was complaining about the lack of quality hard rock these days, I get not one, but two new arrivals from two of my favorite bands to do it. If I had to point to one modern band as my favorite I’d probably point to the Foo Fighters. They never really disappoint (at least in any major way) and they’re about as reliable as you can get in music. In fact, they’re one of the first bands to get me into rock in the first place.

“There ain’t no superheroes now
There ain’t no superheroes, they’re underground
Happy ever after
Counting down to zero hour”

That reliability as musicians, while great, comes with it’s own shortcomings; they never really innovate anymore and lack in true musical inspiration. But I’ll be damned if I still don’t love those thick guitars and throaty screams. It’s just what you see is what you get at this point, and if you’ve heard any Foo Fighters album then you already know what you’re in for on Concrete and Gold. However, they do still do rock music better than 80% of the other acts out there so what we get, while still same old same old, is still very good rock and roll that puts their immense skill and deep knowledge on full display. Their songwriting still mainly relies on power hooks and catchy phrasing but they do poke at politics and society’s current state on songs like “La Dee Da” and “Happy Ever After (Zero Hour)”, with “Happy Ever After” being the most interesting song on the album as they slow things down. Foo Fighters don’t do much new here but they’re still the band you can rely on to make good rock and roll.

Have you heard Concrete and Gold? What’d you think about it? Do you think it’s time the Foo Fighters took risks musically again? Let me know in the comments below and be sure to leave your own ratings and reactions for the album.

Conclusion
Foo Fighters are about as safe a bet as you can place in rock and roll. They don't do anything new here or take any significant risks, but they still continue to churn out good music. They're like that old reliable friend that you know is going to be there no matter what's happening around them.
