Old school turns SOUL-school with a gospel groove. This is the style BJ Wilbanks is bringing back, and it’s in line with that of the genre’s greats.

The throwback sound is right on the money in this track. Wilbanks howls out the notes with all the force of Cocker and the finesse of Cohn.

The chorus reminds me of Vanilla Fudge’s instrumental style without all the edge. This kind of music belongs on the bayou rather than the big city.

The organ was expected in a soul track such as this, but the understated piano and guitar solos were great, welcome surprises. Wilbanks spoon-feeds us riffs and licks at the intro and close to the outro – masterfully sustaining interest throughout the song. For what it’s worth, soul is hit or miss for me, yet I quite enjoyed the experience.

Vocally, BJ is only marginally less raw than Fogerty, smooth enough to tantalize but forceful enough to excite. His enthusiasm is infectious.

He’d have fit right in with the folks at Stax and Motown in their hayday. The loyal retro-soul essence of “Don’t Fight the Feelin” flies at full to excellent effect. So much so, it almost isn’t retro at all; it’s a revival in earnest.

I can jive to this track, can you?
