Following all the spectacle that was the Grammys you would expect a lull in new stuff coming out, but we actually got a pretty good offering of new music videos from artists like Jidenna, Maroon 5, The Weeknd, CeeLo Green, Beyoncé, and others. Check everything I rounded up below, along with my reactions.
MadeinTYO – Skateboard P
Mister “Uber Everywhere” has actually put out a considerable amount of songs over the past year. None anywhere near as catchy as that hit but he definitely has a specific style that he sticks to. “Skateboard P” won’t be his next smash, but it’s a cool song for what it is. The video is basically a “Look, I’m cool” starter kit, featuring Bape, skateboarding, and a Delorean. On another note, if MadeinTYO can make Big Sean look like a giant, just how short is he?
Jidenna – The Let Out
Jiddena’s steadily been dropping music all throughout 2016, clearly on a mission to prove that he’s more than “Classic Man”, and from what I’ve heard so far it’s obvious he’s a talented individual indeed. “The Let Out” sounds like a cool filler song and the video is all about you guessed it, the let out after the club. Always dressed in the best, I really like the way he always incorporates his African heritage into his videos.
Big Baby D.R.A.M. – Cute
I recently heard this song for the first time, not too long ago and it’s been stuck in my head ever since. It’s a fun little video; I don’t know why, but I always like when people use Muppet versions of themselves in their work. I can’t really place his stuff into any specific genre but his music’s always interesting.
Maroon 5 – Cold
Hmm…just what in the fuck is going on here? A chicken giving fellatio, underwater weddings, tentacles, and all other type of animal imagery. Apparently an acid trip gone wrong (maybe right?) at a Future party. Not really sure what it has to do with the song itself, if anything at all, but it’s not worse than their last one. Maroon 5 isn’t really my speed but I don’t necessarily hate this one. Meh.
The Weeknd – Reminder
The Weeknd has had some pretty spectactular music videos for the songs off Starboy, but this one’s pretty straightforward. Outside of a high number of appearances from his famour friends, nothing stands out in particular. The song is fire though, and one of my favorites off the album.
CeeLo Green – Power
CeeLo Green is easily one of the most creative artists we’ve got today, I never know what to expect from his music as it always suprises, but it’s normally always pretty dope. “Power” is a fairly straightforward flip of Diana Ross, but he still turns it into his own. The video is simple, but it’s got some cool visual effects in there.
Rae Sremmurd – Swang
I finally think the Mannequin Challenge has died out (thank god), but Rae Sremmurd obviously want to keep that momentum going so they’ve hit us with a video for “Swang”. Turn up music; I mean did you expect anything else from the duo? The video has them tearing up and turning up on a golf course. Simple entertainment.
Beyoncé – Love Drought
Feel however you want about Beyoncé, but there’s no denying the huge impact Lemonade (her best album to date) had when it landed. I mean it’s almost a year since it’s been out and we’re still getting videos for it and people are still all over it like it’s brand new. Once in a generation type of artist and the video is as stunning as every other one she’s dropped since it’s release.
Bas – Penthouse
Still riding the wave off his phenomenal Too High Too Riot and fresh off his biggest tour to date, Bas hits us with another one off the album. “Penthouse” is a fire song and he gets some great shots from on location in Tokyo for the video. Every time I see visuals from the city, it just serves the reiterate my need to visit there.
