Trailer Roundup 4/3-4/16

Wow! That was a big last couple of weeks! We got some massive trailer drops from movies like Thor: RagnarokTransformers: The Last Knight, All Eyez On Me, the much anticipated Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and much more. Check out everything I rounded up below, along with my reactions.

Thor: Ragnarok

If you would’ve asked me a month ago to list my most anticipated Marvel movies, Thor: Ragnarok would have most likely been at the bottom of that list. He’s just never been that interesting to me and his movies have been average at best when compared to all the others. But after this first look at it, damn it just might be my most anticipated of the year! Now that they’ve introduced full on magic and the cosmos they can finally go all in on the craziest aspects of Thor lore and it looks fucking epic. Did I mention they’re doing part of Planet Hulk!!!! Let’s get this hype train rolling!

The Hitman’s Bodyguard

Besides my obvious excitement of having Deadpool and Nick Fury on screen together, or at least their respective actors, this looks like a really fun movie that could easily come from a comic book, a la John Wick. Samuel L is just gold at this point and I’ll watch pretty much anything he’s in and Ryan Reynolds looks to be a perfect pairing for him in this almost buddy cop flick. Visceral, funny, and the song selection for this trailer was perfect. Instantly on my watch list.

Ingrid Goes West

Parks and Recreation and Legion made me instant fans of Aubrey Plaza. She’s got that off humor kind of like Sarah Silverman, but in an actually funny way. Throw in little Cube and a dark humorous take on cyber stalking and social media, and you might just have something good here.

Transformers: The Last Knight

I really loved the first Transformers and the third had a lot of great moments but the others, especially the last one, were purely watchable for the spectacle of seeing giant robots fuck each other up and watching my childhood come to life. But even that’s started to lose it’s appeal. They’re looking to shake things up by throwing in ties to ancient mythology and have Prime do a heel turn, but I doubt the actual story will improve much. I’m hopeful, but not optimistic. Get it? * wink * * wink * I’ll show myself out.

Chuck

I was always slightly curious to know who Rocky was based off of, not enough to research, but I always assumed it was a loose interpretation of some well known boxing icon, but apparently it was inspired by this guy I’ve never heard of before. He seems like a genuinely interesting guy with an interesting story to tell so I’ll probably check this one out.

Detroit

I’m generally fatigued with all of these historical dramatizations, but I had never even heard of the ’67 riots before this trailer, so I’d be interested in finding out more. It’s not entirely clear if this is factually based or just a story set during that time, but either way it looks like an interesting peek into that era and those events.

LA 92

Now the Watts riots are something I have definitely heard about and something I think most people are familiar with. Sparked off by the police’s brutalizing of Rodney King and their subsequent acquittal, it’s become one of the most iconic moments in US history. But this looks like one of the most interesting retellings yet, using only raw footage from those events. Damn Nat Geo. When’d you start putting out stuff like this?

All Eyez On Me

Tupac is hands down my favorite artist of all-time, so I’m both extremely happy and extremely worried that they’re finally putting his life on film. It’s about time this happened but I really hope they give this the proper respect and quality it deserves. From the trailer I can’t really say which way it’ll turn out but I hope it’s more Straight Outta Compton than Notorious.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

This is the real star of the week and the trailer release that everybody’s been anxiously waiting for. I’ll admit that even though I think the Force Awakens was woefully underwhelming and a shameless nostalgia grab, I still get that school boy excitement whenever they show off something new from Star Wars. As expected, they don’t show too much about The Last Jedi, but we do finally get to hear old man Luke speak and he leaves us with a doozy of a line that’ll have us speculating for the months to come.
