I finally got all caught up on Guillermo Del Toro’s vampire opus, The Strain, as it finished off it’s series after only 4 years. I don’t know how well it was performing and whether or not that was the reason for it ending, but 4 seasons seemed about right for the show regardless as they had been increasingly painting themselves into a corner.

If you had not seen the prior seasons then obviously there will be some minor spoilers ahead. Season 4 picks things up a few months after the giant cliffhanger season 3 left us on with Eph’s (Corey Stoll) absolute s**t of a son (and hands down worse character in TV history) detonating a nuclear bomb paced in the Statue of Liberty, killing hundreds of thousands in the city and effectively kicking off a nuclear winter, allowing The Master and his minions to reign supreme. There was still a lot of work to be done in terms of wrapping the story up and with only 10 episodes to work with, season 4 felt predictably rushed with characters having abrupt change of hearts, people getting killed off without much fan fare, and giant undertakings that seem to take mere seconds. The pacing was not great, and while the show’s storytelling has always been problematic at best, this was by far it’s weakest season in that regard. But the creature design is still absolutely A1 for a TV show (minus one new creature who was more interesting in description than actual use), and they did manage to wrap up most of the loose ends before the credits rolled. The looming end of The Master honestly didn’t feel very satisfactory, mostly due to the presence of said horrible son, but fan favorite Abraham (David Bradley) got the bittersweet ending that he so deserved. It was so satisfying and well played out that I openly cheered in fact.

All in all, The Strain has always been a mixed bag of good and bad and season 4 is no different. In terms of pacing, story telling, and character building, it was definitely the weakest season of them all but in a world where we rarely get proper endings to series, they did a more than serviceable job of tying up loose ends and giving the characters that needed it, proper endings.

Maybe it was just me but Gus felt extremely weak this season. After having such a strong presence early on in the series I was hoping he’d have more of an impactful role. In fact, that applies equally for Vasiliy, Dutch, and Quinlan.

The ending was fairly predictable with Zach having another unearned about face and ultimately being the downfall of The Master, but at least I can rest easy now knowing Zach is no more (f*ck that kid).

Have you seen Season 4 of The Strain? What’d you think about it? What’d you think about the series as whole? Let me know in the comments below and be sure to leave your own rating for the season.
